Administrative Integrity and Hatreds
His refusal of favoritism and his rigorous defense of the rights of the Church drew upon him the hostility of powerful enemies.
Baudouin did not appear beneath the position for which he had rightly been judged worthy. He upheld with strength and perseverance the rights of his church, and rendered full justice to all, without ever letting himself be influenced by his friends or his entourage, detesting above all that spirit of cliques, which often causes those who have the greatest share in the administration of a diocese to make so many mistakes and commit so many injustices. It was this very integrity and his zeal in the exercise of his office that drew against him the most bitter hatred on the part of the wicked. As his conscience made it a duty for him to oppose their unjust and sacrilegious enterprises, they banded together and laid traps for him.
