Martyrdom and first burial
The five saints are locked in lead coffins and thrown into a river before being secretly buried by a Christian named Nicodemus.
Martyrs, and gave orders that they be locked alive in lead coffins and then thrown into the river. The sentence was carried out, and, by this means, our Martyrs found at once their death, their burial, and their crown. Divine Providence permitted that forty-two days later, a Christian called Nicodemus, having found t heir hol Nicodème Christian who collected and buried the bodies of the martyrs. y relics, which the lead itself had brought out of the water, took them up and buried them honorably in his own house. Thus one Nicodemus had given burial to Jesus Christ, our sovereign Master, and another Nicodemus gave it to five of his most faithful servants.
Patronage and iconography

Translation of the relics to Toulouse and the Jura
The bodies are transferred from Rome to Toulouse, then a portion of the relics of Saint Claude arrives in Maynal in Franche-Comté.
## CULT AND RELICS. The martyrology of Du Sanssay asserts that the bodies of these generous Martyrs, which were in Rome, have since been transported to Toulouse, to the church of Saint-Sernin, and placed in a chapel erected in their honor. At a time that we cannot determine, the greater part of the relics of Saint Claude, one of thes saint Claude One of the five martyr sculptors, particularly honored in Franche-Comté. e Christian sculptors, was transported from Toulouse to Franche-Comté. In 1649, they were honored in the church of Maynal (Jura, arrondi ssemen Maynal Village in the Jura department housing the relics of Saint Claude. t of Lons-le-Saunier, canton of Beaufort), one of the oldest in the Jura. This church was then the center of an important parish. When Pope Leo IX came to the Council of Reims, in pape Léon IX Pope who visited the saint's sepulchre in 1049. 1049, he confirmed the Archbishop of Besançon, Ruques, in the possession of thi Ruques Archbishop of Besançon in the 11th century. s domain. In his bull, dated November 19, the Pope mentions "the church of Maynal, where rests," he says, "the body of Saint Claude." Such is the first monument that speaks of these sacred relics. The oldest traditions of Maynal attest that Saint Claude was always honored there as a Martyr. He is represented on the parish banner in the attitude of a man invoking heaven, and whose figure is illuminated by a ray of light. He holds a chisel in one hand and a hammer in the other; beside him is depicted a bust, whose white color imitates marble. It is evident that the painter intended to represent in this way one of these five sculptors who, according to the legends, worked with great perfection, while invoking the name of Jesus Christ.
The cult in Maynal and Besançon
Description of the liturgical traditions, processions, and specific iconography of Saint Claude in Maynal.
The patron saint of Maynal is mentioned in several ancient monuments of the history of Franche-Comté, and in particular in the Catalogue of benefices of the diocese of Besançon. The greater part of his relics has been preserved, since time immemorial, in a gilded wooden reliquary, and his feast is celebrated on the Sunday following the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, under the heading of a non-pontifical Martyr. On that day, before the solemn Mass, and on the day of the octave after Vespers, his relics are carried in procession through the streets of the parish. The antique reliquary is adorned with eight statuettes placed in ogival niches, and one of these images represents the Saint carrying the palm of martyrdom in his hand.
This holy Martyr was ordinar ily called Saint Cl saint Clod ou Cloud One of the five martyr sculptors, particularly honored in Franche-Comté. od or Cloud. This is the name under which he is designated in various acts relating to the parish of Maynal, written at the beginning of the 17th century. He is mentioned under the name of Glaiz or Glanz, martyr, in the martyrology of Chastelain, which adds that his body is preserved in Maynal, in the diocese of Besançon, where he is honored with public worship.
Expansion in Denezières and modern authorizations
The cult extended to Denezières under the name of Terre de Saint-Cloud and received a new episcopal authorization in 1839.
This cult of Saint Cloud was not unique to the church of Maynal. A chapel had been built in his honor by the monks of Ilay. This oratory was placed on the point of a rock that rises near the village of Denezières (Jura, ar rondisseme Denezières Village in the Jura where a chapel was dedicated to Saint Cloud. nt of Saint-Claude, canton of Saint-Laurent), and some relics of the holy Martyr, taken from the church of Maynal, were deposited there. The surrounding territory subsequently took the name of Terre de Saint-Cloud. It is under this title that it is designated in several 19th-century charters, cited by the historians of Franche-Comté.
The chapel of Saint-Cloud was destroyed in the course of time, and the parish church of Denezières was rebuilt to the southeast of the village (1841). It is also under the patronage of Saint Cloud, whose feast is celebrated there on November 8, the day fixed for the cult of this Martyr in all martyrologies.
This cult was again authorized by the lat e Mgr de Chamu Mgr de Chamuff Bishop of Saint-Claude who authorized the cult in 1839. ff, Bishop of Saint-Claude, on May 23, 1839.
