Twelfth bishop of Orléans and successor to Saint Aignan in the 6th century, Saint Moniteur is a pastor whose holiness is attested by local ecclesiastical annals. His relics were solemnly transferred to the monastery of Saint-Agnan in 1029 by King Robert the Pious. He is honored on November 17.

Life 01 / 04

Episcopate and death

Moniteur became the twelfth bishop of Orleans around 484, succeeding Gratien. Although few details remain regarding his acts, his sanctity is attested by the annals of his diocese.

Translation of the relics

In 1029, King Robert the Pious had the remains of Saint Moniteur transferred from the church of Saint-Laurent to the monastery of Saint-Agnan during a solemn ceremony.

His body was buried in the church of Saint-Laurent, in the western region of the city, with the bodies of Saint Agnan, Saint Flou (February 2), and Saint Baudèle (May 20). But, when the King of France, Robert, after having rebuilt the monastery of Saint-Agnan from its ruins, convened a meeting of bishops for its solemn dedication (June 14, 1029), he had the body of Saint Moniteur exhumed, as well as those of the saint Moniteur Twelfth bishop of Orléans in the 5th century. other Saints named above, and those of Saint Esapice of Verdun, priest and abbot of Saint-Mesmin (June 14 and July 17), and of Saint Agie or Austrégilde.

Royal Veneration

King Robert publicly expresses his devotion to the saints of Orléans through a prayer asking for divine protection for his kingdom.

And the pious king showed his great veneration for these Saints with words full of religion that he spoke before all the people; for, throwing himself on his knees, he addressed this prayer to God: "I give thanks to you, good God, who have brought my project to a successful conclusion today, through the merits of Saint Agnan, by rejoicing my soul with the relics of the Saints who now triumph with him. Grant therefore, Lord, through these Saints, your servants, to the living the remission of their sins, and to the dead eternal life and rest. Look upon our world, and this kingdom which belongs to you and which you have given me by your mercy and your goodness; govern it, lead it for the honor and glory of your name."
