Bishop of Cahors
Bishop of Cahors in the 10th century, Gausbert was a prelate admired for his learning and charity towards the poor. A friend of Saint Géraud d'Aurillac, he guided him towards a secular religious life. He is also known for having saved a condemned man and founded the cell of penance that originated the chapel of Le Reclus in Montsalvy.

The Episcopate of Gausbert at Cahors
Gausbert was elected bishop of Cahors by popular acclamation in the 10th century, recognized for his learning, his constant piety, and his affability toward all.

The rescue of the condemned man
Gausbert obtains the pardon of a religious man condemned to death for sorcery after the providential flight of the executioner and the emotion of the crowd.
The chapel of Le Reclus, in the diocese of Saint-Flour (canton of Montsalvy), is a place of pilgrimage where the faithful often come to pray to the Blessed Virgin as the refuge of sinners; here is its origin: a religious man had been condemned to death for the crime of sorcery. Brought back to repentance and Christ ian sentiments saint Gausbert Bishop of Cahors in the 10th century, known for his charity and spiritual counsel. by Saint Gausbert, he had been led to the place of execution, accompanied by Saint Gausbert himself, who had unsuccessfully asked for his pardon with prayers and tears; the executioner having fled without anyone being found to replace him, the multitude gathered to witness the punishment, moved at the sight of the condemned man, touched by his repentance, and carried away by the devotion of Gausbert, had asked for mercy with a unanimous voice. This pardon was only granted on the condition that he would do penance for the rest of his life in a secluded place.
The Chapel of the Recluse at Montsalvy
Gausbert installed the penitent at Montsalvy in a cell that would become the Chapel of the Recluse, successively dedicated to Mary Magdalene and then to the Immaculate Conception.
Gausbert, accepting the condition, had taken him to Montsalv Montsalvy Monastery and hospice founded by Saint Gausbert. y, and had a cell built for him near the town, where the poor religious spent his whole life in the austerities of penance, which he crowned with a death precious before God. On the site of his cell, a chapel was built which was called the Chapel of the Recluse, and first bore the dedication of Saint Mary Magdale ne, model of penitents sainte Marie-Madeleine Primary dedication of the chapel of Le Reclus. ; then the dedication of the Immaculate Conception. The Congregations of Mary have, for this reason, adopted it as their chapel, and people often come to pray within its walls.
