Angelo of Gualdo was an humble Italian shepherd who became a Camaldolese lay brother and later a recluse following a pilgrimage to Compostela. Known for his charity and life of contemplation, he died in 1325 in a miraculous posture of prayer. His cult was officially recognized by Pope Leo XII in 1825.

Born near Gualdo, Angel manifested from his youth a great piety and exemplary charity towards the poor despite his own poverty.

Eremitic life and miracles
He retired into solitude for a life of fasting and contemplation, triumphing over temptations and performing miracles.
Some time later, he went to live as a recluse in a solitude of his native land: there he led an angelic life in fasting and contemplation. On feast days, a priest brought him Holy Communion. The demon sought to turn him away from his vocation, but by means of the sign of the cross, Angel put him to flight. Favored with the gift of miracles, he performed several for the sake of his neighbor.
Death and recognition of the cult
Died in 1325 in a posture of prayer, he became the patron of Gualdo; his cult was officially approved by Leo XII in 1825.
When he died in the Lord, on January 25, 1325, his body remained on its knees in the position of a man praying. He was taken to Gualdo where Gualdo City in the Papal States of which the Blessed is the patron. the numerous miracles that occurred at his tomb led the inhabitants to choose him as their patron. Leo XII approved his cult Léon XII Pope who proceeded with the beatification of Julian. in 1825.
