Saint Auspice governed the Church of Toul in the middle of the 5th century, distinguishing himself by his holiness and exceptional merit.
The date of the writi ngs of Auspice Fifth bishop of Toul in the 5th century. Auspice, which have come down to us, can help to determine the time of his episcopate. He governed the church of Toul towards the middle of the 5th century. The rare merit and holiness of this prelate attracted the esteem of all the people who knew him or who heard of him. Sidonius Apollinaris, who was bishop of Clermont, heaps praise upon him in a letter that he wrote to Count Arbogast, governor of the city of Trier and grandson of Arbogast, a Gallic count, general of the army of Valentinian II, with whom Baronius had confused him. This count had asked Sidonius Apollinaris to instruct him in his duties. The bishop of Clermont advised him to address himself preferably to Lupus of Troyes and to Auspi ce of Toul, fro Auspice de Toul Fifth bishop of Toul in the 5th century. m whom he could draw all the more help as they were his neighbors and as, moreover, they possessed all the qualities that befit their character.

Bishop Sidonius Apollinaris praises Auspicius in a letter to Count Arbogastes, recommending him as a spiritual advisor.

He received from him a reply, in aligned prose, which tradition has preserved and whose thoughts and style, by inspiring piety, perfectly justify the impression that Apollinaris had given of his illustrious friend.
