A 10th-century Lorrain religious figure, John of Vandières distinguished himself by his erudition and asceticism at the Abbey of Gorze. Sent as an ambassador to Caliph Abd al-Rahman III by Emperor Otto I, he later became abbot of his monastery, restoring its fervor until his death in 973.

Spiritual crisis and conversion

John goes through a crisis of conscience, reproaching himself for his lack of virtue, and decides to devote himself entirely to sacred study and asceticism.

From this moment, he seriously began a more perfect life: he read and learned by heart the entire Old and New Testament, the books of the divine offices, the decrees of the Councils, the rules of penance, the ceremonies and chant of the Church, ecclesiastical jurisprudence, civil laws, the homilies of the Fathers and the lives of the Saints, to such an extent that he spoke of them with as much ease as if he were reading from the book; to these labors, he added fasting, vigils, frequent prayers and macerations, aspiring with all his heart to leave the world and all its goods.

Purification and pilgrimages

After confessing to the hermit Humbert in Verdun, he undertook great pilgrimages to Rome and the high monastic places of Italy.

To rid his soul of everything it might still have retained from the long stay it had made there, he confessed all the sins of his life to a holy herm it of Verdun, named Humbert, who cont saint ermite de Verdun, nommé Humbert Saint hermit of Verdun to whom John confessed his sins. ributed not a little to increasing his love for mortification. Monastic life at Gorze

Upon returning to Lorraine, he entered the Abbey of Gorze where he distinguished himself by his humility and fervor, despite the rigor of his austerities.

Embassy to Spain and Abbacy

Sent by Emperor Otto I to the Caliph of Cordoba, he fulfilled his mission with success before becoming Abbot of Gorze in 960.

Emperor Otto I having requested two monks from Gorze to send them to Abd-ar-Rahman III, King of the Moors of Spain, our Saint was a notre Saint Subject of the biography, monk and later abbot of Gorze in the 10th century. ppointed head of this embassy; he fulfilled this mission with such wisdom and courage that he excited the admiration of the infidel king. Upon his return, he was appoin ted Abbot of abbé de Gorze Place of initial formation for Adalberon II. Gorze, around the year 960.

Death and sources

The saint died in 973, leaving behind a reputation for great holiness recorded in the chronicles of the diocese of Toul.

We regret not having been able to find other details on such a holy life, which ceased on earth to continue gloriously in heaven, in the year 973.
