Mission in Bavaria and foundation of Salzburg

Called by Duke Theodo, Rupert evangelized Bavaria, baptized the sovereign, and founded the episcopal see of Salzburg as well as Saint Peter's Church.

A life so holy produced the most abundant fruits: this was attested to by the conversion of so many peoples whom his efforts brought into the path of salvation. Not only neighboring countries, but foreign lands were indebted to him for the Gospel. Upon the reputation of his holiness and his miracles, Theodo, Duke of Bavaria, sent him an embassy composed of the leading figures of his states, and begged him to be willing to visit his domains, in order to enlighten him, and his peoples, with the truths of the faith. Rupert, although weary from numerous persecutions, did not refuse this pious and holy burden; and little by little he baptized Theodo along with a great number of principal lords and an immense multitude of other persons. He began by fixing his episcopal see in a place now called Salzburg; and he was the first to build in that place, in honor of Saint Peter, prince of the Apostles, a church provided with all the ministers that the exercise of divine worship requires. Then he turned all his thoughts toward the conversion of the rest of Bavaria to the holy religion of Jesus Christ. He therefore associated with himself twelve companions in his zeal and his labors; and finally, God seconding his pious efforts, he brought this country to the faith, and deserved t o be called the Apos Apôtre de la Bavière Bishop of Worms and later of Salzburg, evangelizer of Bavaria. tle of Bavaria. After having founded a great number of churches in various places, and having perfectly fulfilled the functions of the episcopate for several years, he had just finished the holy Sacrifice, when, on the same day of Easter, he felt his end approaching. He fortified the hearts of his disciples with a final, entirely paternal exhortation; then he passed to the Lord to go and enjoy eternal heavenly beatitude.
