Saint Publius was the successor of Dionysius the Areopagite as Bishop of Athens in the 2nd century. According to certain traditions reported by Ado, he was the son of the magistrate of Malta healed by Saint Paul. He was himself succeeded by Quadratus at the head of the Church of Athens.

Origins and identification

Some sources, including the Martyrology of Ado, identify Publius as the son of the magistrate of Malta healed by Saint Paul.

Dionysius, Bishop of Corinth, informs us that Saint Publius succeeded Dionysius the Areopagite in the church of Athens, and we read in Eusebius and Saint Jerome that he was himself replaced by Quadratus. According to some, this Publius is the son of that magistrate of the island of Malta whom Saint Paul healed of dysentery. Ado does not hesitate to profess this opinion in his Martyrology.
