Bishop of Corinth in the 2nd century under Marcus Aurelius, Saint Dionysius was a pastor famous for his eloquence and apostolic zeal. He wrote numerous letters to the churches, notably to Rome, to combat heresies and maintain ecclesiastical discipline. Although the Greeks honor him as a martyr for his sufferings, he appears to have died in peace.

Introduction and ministry
Bishop of Corinth in the 2nd century under Marcus Aurelius, Denys is recognized for his virtue, his eloquence, and his apostolic zeal.

He was one of the pastors who distinguished themselves the most in the second century, both by their virtue and by their eloquence. His zeal was too active to be limited to the instruction of the faithful entrusted to his care. He also wrote letters to various churches, filled with a truly apostolic spirit. Unfortunately, they have not reached us, and only a few fragments remain in the ecclesiastical history of Eusebius.
Relations with the Church of Rome
Dionysius maintained a correspondence with the faithful of Rome, praising their traditional charity and the actions of Pope Soter.
One of these letters was addressed to the faithfu l of Rome Birthplace of Maximian. Rome. Saint Dionysius thanked them for the alms they had sent. "From the beginning of Christianity," he told them, "you have been accustomed to render all kinds of assistance to the faithful and to provide for the needs of many churches. By your liberality, you have provided for the subsistence of the poor and of those brethren who worked in the mines; in this, you have shown yourselves to be imitators of your ancestors. Struggle against heresies
The saint denounces the falsification of his writings by heretics and combats doctrinal errors stemming from pagan philosophy.
Saint Denys then complained that his letters had been corrupted by heretics. "I have written some letters at the request of our brothers; but they have been falsified by the ministers of the devil, who have made deletions and additions to them. One should not be surprised that the text of Holy Scripture has been corrupted by forgers, since they have not spared works of much lesser authority.
As the heresies of the first centuries came less from false interpretations of Scripture than from errors taught in the schools of pagan philosophers, they were almost all nothing but a heap of reveries mixed with some superstitions of paganism. Saint Denys fought them, and showed from which sect of philosophers each of them drew its origin.
Cult and traditions
Honored as a martyr by the Greeks and as a confessor by the Latins, he seems to have died in peace despite his sufferings.
He is honored on November 29 by the Greeks, who give him the title of Martyr because he suffered much for the faith. It appears, however, that he died in peace. The Latins honor him on April 8, but only as a confessor.
