A wealthy young widow from Huy in the 13th century, Saint Jutta refused to remarry in order to dedicate herself to the service of lepers. At twenty-three, she abandoned luxury to care for the most neglected sick free of charge before ending her life as a recluse.

Service at the leper colony

At twenty-three, she left her affluent environment to serve the sick voluntarily in a poor and neglected leper colony.

In the vicinity of the town where she lived was a leper colony, that is to say, a house of refuge for lepers. As the hospital in question was very poor, it was difficult to find charitable people who would want to go there to serve the sick.

Charity as proof of piety

The text concludes with a spiritual reflection linking the love of neighbor to true devotion, citing the Gospel of John.

Oh! What a good devotee Saint Jutte was! How well she understood that works of charity are the touchstone of true piety! It is written, indeed, in the Gospel according to Saint John: "He who does not l saint Jean Roman martyr beheaded in 363. ove his brother remains in death."
