The Baronius Hypothesis
The historian Baronius suggests that Athenogenes could be the true author of the Christian apology addressed to the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus.
Baronius Baronius Disciple of Philip, historian and cardinal, author of the Annales ecclesiastici. suspects that Saint Athenogenes might well be the author of the beautiful apology for Christianity addressed to the empe rors Marcus Marc-Aurèle Roman emperor marking the chronological limit of Hegesippus's work. Aur elius a Commode Roman emperor who succeeded Marcus Aurelius in 180. nd Commodus, and commonly attrib uted to an Athénagore Christian apologist to whom the cited work is traditionally attributed. Athenagoras about whom absolutely nothing is known. According to this opinion, the name Athenagoras would be nothing more than an alteration of Athenogenes.
