Archbishop of Lyon in the 7th century and former advisor to Clovis II, Saint Annemond was a zealous pastor and the mentor of Saint Wilfrid. A victim of the tyranny and calumnies of the Mayor of the Palace Ebroin, he was assassinated near Chalon-sur-Saône in 657. His name remains attached to the city of Saint-Chamond.

Origins and Episcopal Elevation
Coming from an illustrious Gallo-Roman family, Annemond became an advisor to King Clovis II before being elected Bishop of Lyon around 650.
Saint Annemond Saint Annemond Archbishop of Lyon and 7th-century martyr. came from one of the most illustrious families in Gaul. His father, Sigenius Sigenius Father of Saint Annemund and prefect of Lyon. , originally from Rome, was prefect of Lyon under the reigns of Dagobert an d Clovis Clovis II King of the Franks under whom Aquilin served in the army. II; his mother was named Petronia. Raised at court with his brother Delphin, who was governor of Lyon, Annemond earned the esteem of Clovis II because of his virtues, and this prince chose him as one of his advisors. His zeal and piety led to his election, around 650, to succeed Vivence in t he see of Lyo siège de Lyon Episcopal see of Saint Eucher. n, and some historians note that this choice was so universally approved that several cities were seen sending gifts of the greatest richness for his consecration.
Pastoral Ministry and Reception of Wilfrid
As Primate of the Gauls, he developed monasteries and welcomed Saints Benedict Biscop and Wilfrid, the latter becoming his devoted disciple.
Having become Primate of the Gauls, Annemond fulfilled with the most scrupulous exactitude all the duties of a holy and faithful pastor. He subscribed to the privilege of exemption granted on June 22, 653, to the Abbey of Saint-Denis in France, completed the buildings of Saint-Pierre, and established there a community of nuns where his two sisters, Petrouille and Lucie, took the veil and dedicated themselves particularly, along with their companions, to works of charity. He received with great marks of affection and respect Saint Benedict Biscop, w ho, acc Wilfrid Bishop present at the court of Dagobert II. ompanied by the young Wilfrid, later Bishop of York, was passing through Lyon on his way from England to Rome. When Wilfrid stayed in Lyon upon his return, Annemond attached him to himself and kept him by his side. The kindness of the holy prelate had made him forget his homeland to remain in the Gauls, and the Bishop of Lyon, charmed by the virtue and other brilliant qualities of his disciple, gave him the clerical tenure and wished to make him his heir. But Wilfrid, after having stayed three years in Lyon, had the sorrow of seeing the blood shed of the one he regarded as his father, and the generosity to follow him even unto death.
Persecution by Ebroin and martyrdom
A victim of the slanders of the Mayor of the Palace Ebroin, Annemond was assassinated near Chalon-sur-Saône in 657.
After the death of Clovis II, Ebroi Ebroïn Mayor of the palace responsible for the death of Saint Rambert. n, Mayor of the Palace, feared that Annemond would raise his voice to make known the vexations with which he was burdening the people of Lyon. He therefore resolved to take his life. To this end, he resorted to slander and accused him of the crime of high treason and of collusion with certain foreign princes to take the scepter from the young Clotaire III. No sooner had the fierce Ebroin learned that Annemond had escaped his pursuits by flight than he dispatched satellites after him, under the pretext of bringing him to the king. However, as he feared that the venerable prelate would prove his innocence too clearly, he gave orders to his soldiers to massacre him before he arrived at court. This took place on a secluded path, near Chalon -sur-Saône, on S Châton-sur-Saône Site of the saint's martyrdom. eptember 28, 657. Saint Wilfrid and the other ecclesiastics who accompanied the bishop brought his body back to Lyon and buried it in the church of Saint-Pierre, where his relics were preserved until the time of the Revolution.
Geographical legacy and devotion
His name is given to the city of Saint-Chamond and he is invoked against epilepsy.
The name o f Saint Chamo saint Chamond Archbishop of Lyon and 7th-century martyr. nd was given to a city in the former province of Forez, today the seat of a canton in the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne (Loire). There was formerly, in Paris, a mansion called the Hôtel Saint-Chamond, which the daughters of the Christian Union acquired in 1683, and where they built a church that became the main community of their congregation, and which was dedicated under the patronage of the holy bishop of Lyon.
