Saint Zeno of Verona

Bishop, Martyr or Confessor

Death
Temps de saint Ambroise (pour le confesseur) ou sous Gallien (pour le martyr) (inconnue)

Bishop of Verona in the 4th century, Saint Zeno is the author of numerous sermons known as Tractatus, which address dogma and discipline. His historical identity is a subject of debate, with some distinguishing a martyr under Gallienus from a confessor contemporary to Saint Ambrose. His writings provide valuable testimony on ancient baptismal rites.

Debate on the attribution of the writings

The text examines the authenticity of the sermons attributed to Saint Zeno, noting that ancient authors such as Saint Jerome did not count him among ecclesiastical writers.

One finds, in the library of the holy Fathers, some treatises and some sermons under the name of Saint Zeno of Verona. Some saint Zénon de Vérone Bishop of Verona and author of sermons in the 4th century. attribute them to our Saint: which is contested; Eusebius and Saint Jerome do not place h saint Jérôme Father of the Church and biographical source for Amand. im among the number of ecclesiastical writers; we refer the reader on this matter to Bellarmine, in his book on ecclesiastical writers, and to Godeau, Bishop of Vence, in the first volume of his *History of the Church*.

The distinction between two Zenons

Baronius distinguishes two saints of the same name in Verona: a bishop and martyr under Gallienus, and a bishop and confessor contemporary with Saint Ambrose.

We only note here that Baronius, in order to resolve all these differences, recognizes two Saint Zenons of Ver ona: o Vérone City of birth and foundation of the order of Fazzio. ne a bishop and martyr under Gallie Gallien Roman emperor associated with the reign of Valerian. nus, and the other a bishop, confessor, and author of the *Homilies*, aroun d the time of saint Ambroise Saint who appeared in a vision to Bruno. Saint Ambrose. Others believe that the same person is sometimes called a Martyr, because he suffered much during the persecutions, and at other times a confessor, because he did not shed his blood for the defense of the faith. According to some authors, the Gallienus whose daughter he delivered is not the Emperor Gallienus, but some prince from near Verona, much later than that emperor. These remarks should in no way prevent one from adhering to the substance of what we have said.

Critical editions and corrections

The history of the publications of Zeno's sermons is marked by the 1739 edition by the Ballerini brothers, who corrected the errors of previous historians such as Tillemont.

In 1508, one hundred and twenty-seven sermons were printed in Venice under the name of Saint Zeno; they were reprinted in Verona in 1586, and in the Library of the Fathers, only the first part bears the name of Saint Zeno in the manuscripts, as in the one given by Binemar to the monastery of Saint-Remi in Reims; the second contains pieces by various authors whose names are unknown. This led Tillemont, Dupin, Ceillier, etc., into several errors; faults which were very well pointed out by the Ballerini brothers in the excellent M.M. Ballerini Learned brothers from Verona, editors of the works of Zeno. edition they produced of Zeno's works in Verona in 1739, in-folio, and which they dedicated to Cardinal Passionei. These two scholars also shed the greatest light on the difficulties that could be raised concerning the Saint's writings. They called his sermons Tractatus, following the a ncient ma Tractatus Short and familiar instructions addressed to the people by Zeno. nuscripts. This was the name formerly given to the short and familiar instructions that were given to the people.

Doctrinal and liturgical content

The treatises of Zeno offer precious testimonies on baptism by immersion and the use of medals for the newly baptized.

The *treatises* or sermons of Saint Zeno are divided into two books, one of which contains sixteen, and the other seventy-seven. Those of the second book are much shorter than those of the first. One finds in all of them very important things regarding dogma, morality, and discipline. It appears, from the thirty-fifth, bk. II, p. 23, that, in the time of Saint Zeno, it was the custom to immerse the entire body of those being baptized in water (which was heated). This Saint is also the only author who speaks of the custom of giving a medal to all baptized persons. See M.M. Ballerini, *Annot. in loc. cit.*, p. 233 and in bk. I, tract. 14, p. 188.

Analysis of the apocrypha

Certain sermons formerly attributed to Zeno are identified as belonging to Potamius, Saint Hilary, Saint Basil, or Rufinus of Aquileia.

These skilled critics have provided, in the form of an appendix, the sermons falsely attributed to Saint Zeno. Two are by Potamius, a Greek bishop. They are cited in a letter written to Saint Athanasius, and published by D. Luc d'Achery, Spicil. vol. III, p. 299.
