Originally from Cappadocia, Sisinnius, Martyrius and Alexander were sent by Saint Vigilius of Trent to evangelize the Tyrolean Alps. Despite persecution by local pagans, they founded a church in Méthon before being put to death in 397 for refusing to sacrifice to idols. Their ashes were collected in Trent and their triumph was documented by Saint Vigilius himself.

Mission 01 / 05

Arrival in Italy and meeting with Saint Ambrose

Originally from Cappadocia, Sisinnius, Martyrius, and Alexander arrived in Milan during the reign of Theodosius and were recommended by Saint Ambrose to the Bishop of Trent.

These three Saints, the latter two of whom were brothers, came from Cappadocia to Italy during the reign of Theodosius the Great. They remained for some time in Mila n, where Saint saint Ambroise Archbishop of Milan who prophesied the episcopate of Gaudentius. Ambrose treated them with all the regard due to their virtue. Their courageous faith, nobly impatient, led the Bishop of Milan to designate them to the Bishop of Trent, who was crying out for help to bring the light of the Gospel into certain districts of his diocese that it had not yet illuminated.

Evangelization of the Tyrol

Ordained by Saint Vigilius, the three missionaries preached in the Val d'Anagna and founded a church in Methon despite local hostility.

The martyrdom of Sisinnius

During a pagan festival, the missionaries refuse to sacrifice to idols; Sisinnius is beaten to death by the angry crowd.

The pagans saw with spite the number of worshippers of their gods diminish. During one of their festivals, where they held a kind of procession with their idols, they wanted to force the new Christians to join them. Sisinnius and his companions did everything in their power so that no one from their small flock would succumb to temptation. The pagans, having been informed of this, resolved to unleash their fury against the holy preachers. They arrested them in the church, where they were singing the praises of God. Upon their refusal to sacrifice to the idols, they were beaten with such cruelty that they were left nearly dead on the spot. Sisinnius expired a few hours later.

Martyrdom of Martyrius and Alexander

Martyrius is dragged over stones until death, while Alexander is burned alive on a pyre with the bodies of his companions in 397.

The next day, Martyrius Martyrius Lector and brother of Alexander, a martyr dragged to death. and Alexander sang the praises of God as calmly as if they had not been wounded the day before. They withdrew, however, at the approach of the pagans. The latter, having found the body of Sisinnius, subjected it to a thousand indignities. They then searched for his companions. They found Martyrius in a garden, where they threw him to the ground, bathed in his blood; after which they tied him by the feet to a lever and dragged him over the stones until he was dead.

There remained only Alexander, who was also arrested. They first tried to Alexandre Roman soldier converted by Victor and martyr. intimidate him with threats, and they burned the bodies of Sisinnius and Martyrius in his presence. As he still persisted in the confession of the faith, they threw him onto the same pyre, where he consumed his sacrifice on May 29, 397.
