A disciple and friend of Saint Jerome, Heliodorus was a Bishop of Altino in the 4th century. After traveling in the East and living in the desert, he returned to Italy where he fought against Arianism, notably at the Council of Aquileia in 381. He is recognized for having combined monastic fervor with the duties of the episcopate.

Born in Dalmatia in the 4th century, Heliodorus became the disciple and friend of Saint Jerome, leading a life of study and piety.

Bishop of Altino and defense of the faith
After joining the clergy of Aquileia, he became Bishop of Altino and participated in the Council of Aquileia in 381 to combat Arianism.
After waiting a long time, Saint Jerome, not seeing him return, wrote him a pressing letter to urge him to break entirely with the world; but God had other designs for Heliodorus. Heliodorus died around 390; Saint Jerome praises the monastic regularity of his episcopal life.
He died around the year 390. Saint Jerome never forgot his former pupil, and, in one of his letters, he bears witness to him having lived in the episcopate with as much fervor and regularity as in a monastery.
